The Shot I Lost and Lessoned I Learned

I was looking at some photos that I took two weekends ago at a local park. When I say park I don't mean a small one with some playground equipment this is a good size park with hiking trails and picnic areas and several places to go fishing. It also has a 2 acre dog park. My husband and I were checking this park out to see if it's a place we would want to bring our German Shepherd to. We were down at the water when a couple comes up behind us with there dog and they immediately start a conversation with us. As they are telling us about their dog and how he only has a short time left and their trying to let him enjoy the things he loves the dog starts walking toward me from the water and so I instantly grab for my camera and snap a shot. Now here's where I went wrong, instead of taking a few seconds to check my settings I point and shot and when I viewed the photo at home I noticed it was one of those once in a life time shots and it was ruined because it is way to underexposed. Even though I shoot in RAW format I couldn't save the shot no matter what I did. It was a priceless shot and I even had a story to go with it and now it is lost. All I have is the story and no photo. The lesson I learned is to always PAY ATTENTION and NEVER get so overwhelmed that I lose focus and NEVER just point and shoot. The rare priceless shots are what make me so passionate about photography.
